"The policy of cooperation and rapprochement among the countries in the region proper and beyond has unquestionably produced substantial results. It has shown that the aftermath of war can be alleviated best by giving space to life and to the future. The past must not be forgotten, but we should not be its captives. Self-pitying and accusing others for one's woes is the worst option, and this holds true for states as well. This is why the policy of cooperation and partnership is the way which will bring all of us, sooner or later, to the same goal: membership in the European Union. But that is not a goal in itself - it is a means which will help Europe as a whole to finally achieve lasting peace, stability and progress. And the Republic of Croatia will continue to contribute actively to the process."
