23 January 2009 - CEIS mourns Christine von Kohl (1923-2009)

Christine von Kohl was a renowned reporter on the Balkan region, she was Balkan-correspondent for different media as Die Presse, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Deutsche Welle, and authored a great number of articles and studies about Yugoslavia and Kosovo. Her latest book "Eine Dänin am Balkan: zwischen Brüssel und Kosova – kritische Skizzen" was published 2008 in Klagenfurt (Wieser Verlag). She lived in Belgrad for 17 years, was human-rights-consultant for different NGOs and an outstanding activist of the International Helsinki Federation of Human Rights (1990-1994). In 1993 she founded “Kulturni Centar” for Bosnian refugees in Austria and organized the conference "Die Wiederkehr der albanischen Frage and Die Identitäten Bosnien-Herzegowinas". Last but not least, she was editor of the Vienna-based review "Balkan anders".

In 2003, we had the pleasure to edit together the volume "Bosnien-Herzegowina: 8 Jahre nach Dayton - Krisen, Kritik und Perspektiven" (edited by Christine von Kohl, Christophe Solioz and Vedran Dzihic, Vienna: Neuer Wissenschaftlicher Verlag and Balkan - Südosteuropäïscher Dialog, Diskurs # 1, vol. 3, no 5, 2003). She was an active member both of the Association Bosnia and Herzegovina 2005 and of the CEIS. She also wrote an essay, "Kosovo is Independent from Serbia, but the Conflict is Not Resolved," for our book "Conflict and Renewal: Europe Transformed" (edited by Hannes Swoboda and Christophe Solioz, Baden-Baden: Nomos, 2007). As illustrated by her contributed in this volume, she was well aware that there was still a lot to be done in the Balkans.
