11 December 2008 - Ownership of Regional Cooperation in the Western Balkans



The issue of ownership has become increasingly prominent in political and public debates both within South Eastern Europe and internationally. It is an indication of the wish of the international community to hand over more of the responsibility to the governments and societies of South Eastern Europe; but also a sign of the societies of South Eastern Europe and their political, social and academic leadership wanting to take more ownership in defining the paths of their respective countries and the region as a whole after more than a decade of international intervention. 10-11 November 2008 - Dealing with the past and reconciliation processes in the Western Balkans


In order to explore different aspects of dealing with the past and reconciliation in the Western Balkans the CEIS, the IDM and Osservatorio sui Balcani organized an international two-day conference “Dealing with the past and reconciliation processes in the Western Balkans” on 10-11 November 2008. The conference was attended by prominent activists from the Western Balkans, international scholars and representatives of the international community in order to: first, produce a general and objective overview about the processes of reconciliation in the Western Balkans; second, make an assessment of efforts, shortcomings, and achievements in the field of reconciliation; third, discuss the role of the media in the process of dealing with the past; and, last, examine the prospects for reconciliation in context of the EU integration.

02 October 2008 - Vienna Seminar of Nobel Laureates


Wolfgang Petritsch took part at the Vienna seminar in presence of the Nobel Laureates Eric Maskin, Robert Mundell and Joseph Stiglitz. The lectures and the following discussion took place in the Ceremonial Chamber of the University of Vienna.

12-13 September 2008 - International conference on the Western Balkans in Berlin


Christophe Solioz attended the international conference: The EU and the Western Balkans: The Objectives of the Slovenian EU Presidency – Implementation and Continuation, organized in Berlin by the Southeast Europe Association (Südosteuropa Gesellschaft) and the German Federal Foreign Office; he presented a paper "Regionalism Redefined: The Western Balkans towards Interregionalism"
