23 February 2007 - W. Petritsch receives the European Human Rights Prize

Wolfgang Petritsch, chair of CEIS Senior Advisory Board and currently ambassador to the UN in Geneva, has been awarded the European Human Rights Prize for 2006 by Pro Europa European cultural foundation. This prestigious award was presented to Petritsch by the Basel-based European cultural foundation Pro Europa, which operates under the patronage of the President of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. The chairman of the award committee is Prince Henrik of Denmark.

The ceremony took place on 23 February 2007 at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Bernard Schreiner, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and President of the French delegation to PACE, awarded the prize. Carla Del Ponte, Chief Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, pronounced the laudatio.

Wolfgang Petritsch received this prize in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a top diplomat and crisis manager during his time as the International High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, from 1999 to 2002, and his commitment to the total banning of landmines. From 2003 to 2005, Mr Petritsch held the office of the President of the Nairobi Summit for a Mine-free World, and has been instrumental in formulating an action programme aimed at the total banning of landmines.

The European Human Rights Prize has previously been awarded to the former Presidents of Hungary and Finland, Arpad Göncz and Martti Ahtisaari, the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, the founder of Médécins sans Frontières, Bernard Kouchner, the committed Czech human rights campaigner Bishop Vaclav Maly, and the chairman of Amnesty International in Turkey, Levent Korkut.
